Internationalization

Localizable

All portals are fully localizable. Current languages supported include 103 languages through Google Translate initially followed by local speaker review of all strings in all platforms. The platform may be localized to any language requirement.

Federated Databases

We have created a set of federated databases for postal codes, pharmacies, medical professionals and of course strings for localization. Each database is country specific and we offer a uniform API to query those federated databases.

Platform Scalability

When choosing the technologies with which to develop the Covantex platform, scalability was one of the requirements. The languages and platforms chosen had to be extremely stable, robust, have long term support and have a proven track record in high volume transactional ecosystems. When considering the scalability of the platform, three key components need to be looked at: the client applications, our server API and the accompanying data store.

The desktop web app is built using Angular, an open source framework being continually improved by Google. Angular offers many unique properties but the strength applicable to the scalability of this platform is how Angular differs in content delivery from the standard web site model. Rather than communicating with a server, Angular is client-side and browser-based—allowing websites to quickly and efficiently render. All user interface updates happen in the browser, instead of re-fetching HTML pages from a server. When a client requests one of the Covantex desktop clients, the entire set of files that comprise the UI are delivered in a single payload or as few separate smaller payloads depending on requested functionality. After that initial request is filled, the server does not have any more code related files to deliver for the life of the client. The client then only requires data to populate each page which is dynamically rendered on the client, thus significantly reducing the size of all subsequent server responses, the quantity of requests that have to be made to the server and the required amount of disk read operations. 

The API was developed using Microsoft’s ASP.NET MVC - a well-known web application framework for its stability and performance in high volume transactional environments. In the instance of Covantex’s API, a couple factors need to be considered. The API can reside on any server running Microsoft IIS. As allocated hardware reaches its limits, more resources can easily be added. There are no limits to how many instances of the API that can be spun up and new instances can be rapidly deployed with minimal configuration. Most notably, the API is multi-tenant allowing multiple organizations and resellers to utilize one system.

The key to supporting the API’s multi-tenant architecture is a fast, reliable and scalable data store. Covantex’s platform utilizes Amazon’s Relational Database Service (RDS) for the PostgreSQL deployment. Amazon RDS deployments can be initially provisioned with 5GB of storage and scaled up to 3TB per instance. Scaling operations complete within minutes and without service interruptions. In addition, Amazon RDS makes it easy to use replication to enhance availability and reliability for production workloads. Replica sets of the Covantex database can be provisioned on the fly and synced in real time to accommodate for high read volume scenarios (i.e.: reporting) and to reduce the round trip response times. Using Read Replicas, Amazon RDS also enables us to scale out beyond the capacity of a single database deployment. An additional replica set is provided and continuously synced as a failover in a secondary Availability Zone (AZ). From a hardware perspective, the RDS lives on ultra-fast SSD drives that consistently perform at provisioned level and support bursts up to 20,000 IOPS and allow a throughput of 320 MiB.

The components in the Covantex platform were developed with the end goal of large scale use in mind. From front to back, the platform maximizes the potential of the languages, technologies and services utilized to serve the most end users possible and in the most efficient manner in which it can be accomplished.
